Shire Horses
Firstly, you will learn how to prepare them for work through grooming after which you will learn which tack is used and for what purpose. The course continues to teach you how to drive the pair of shire horses and actually take over the proverbial reins. Depending on the time of year and work needed to be done will dictate which of our extensive range of horse drawn implements you will use to carry out a variety of tasks.
The horse drawn implements could include: Harrowing and rolling the fields, Cutting grass to make hay, but only while the sun shines! Muck spreading which can be done all year round, Carting corn in from the fields following harvesting and Ploughing the fields. The day will include a ploughman’s lunch and a rest for you and the horses. In the afternoon you will work the horses again and then importantly learn how to treat them when they have finished their work by cleaning and feeding them followed by cleaning the tack.
There is always time for photographs and a wander around the rest of our historic farm before you leave feeling tired and wanting more! All courses are made suitable to your own level of experience and are suitable for all. All you need is sturdy footwear and probably waterproofs.
£185 for a full day’s experience working with shire horses.
